# Windows in-place upgrade from cloud

The **Windows in-place upgrade from cloud** template upgrades an existing Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation to a newer version of Windows 11, keeping the apps, settings, and user data. The Windows media is downloaded from Microsoft, so you do not need to import an operating system image.

Start the task sequence from the existing OS, for example from Intune or by running the DeployR client. See [Starting a task sequence in an existing OS](/deployr/deployment-methods/starting-a-task-sequence-in-an-existing-os.md). The template is tagged **Windows 10** and **Windows 11**, so it only appears in the task sequence list when running in one of those operating systems.

The template contains these steps:

* **Existing OS**
  * **Pre-upgrade tasks** (disabled by default): a **Run PowerShell script** step for anything that needs to happen before the upgrade.
  * [**Upgrade operating system from cloud**](/deployr/reference/step-definitions/upgrade-operating-system-from-cloud.md): Windows 11 25H2, **Upgrade** method, dynamic update disabled, Shift-F10 disabled.
* **Rollback**: runs only when the upgrade failed (`_LastActionSucceeded` equals `false`).
  * **Run PowerShell script**: add your own recovery or reporting script.
* **New OS**: runs only when the upgrade succeeded (`_LastActionSucceeded` equals `true`).
  * **Post-upgrade tasks** (disabled by default): a **Run PowerShell script** step for work in the upgraded OS.

After creating a task sequence from this template, edit the **Upgrade operating system from cloud** step to choose the target version. Add scripts to the pre-upgrade, rollback, and post-upgrade steps as needed, and enable them.

To check whether devices are ready to upgrade without upgrading them, change the upgrade method to **CompatScanOnly**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://documentation.2pintsoftware.com/deployr/task-sequences/task-sequence-templates/windows-in-place-upgrade-from-cloud.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
