# Configure Linux for Entra ID

{% hint style="info" %}
This is only supported in DeployR Enterprise.
{% endhint %}

The **Configure Linux for Entra ID** step sets up Ubuntu so that users can sign in with their Entra ID credentials. It installs Canonical's [authd](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/authd/stable-docs/) service with the Microsoft Entra ID broker and configures it for your tenant.

Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 are supported. On other versions, the step fails.

### Options

| Option                   | Description                                                               |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Authentication app ID | Application (client) ID of the Entra ID app registration used to sign in. |
| Authentication tenant ID | ID of your Entra ID tenant. |

Create the app registration in Entra ID as described in the authd documentation: [Configure authd](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/authd/stable-docs/howto/configure-authd/).

### What the step configures

* Installs `authd` and the `authd-msentraid` snap. On Ubuntu 24.04, this adds the `ppa:ubuntu-auth/authd` repository; on 26.04, it enables the universe repository.
* Configures the broker with your tenant and app ID. Only the device owner can sign in: the first Entra ID user who signs in becomes the owner (the authd `allowed_users = OWNER` setting).
* Enables the authd PAM profile. Local accounts can still sign in.
* Hides the user list on the GDM sign-in screen, so users type their Entra ID user name.
* Sets `LOGIN_TIMEOUT` to 120 seconds, to give users time to complete the Entra ID sign-in.

To let other users or groups sign in, change `/var/snap/authd-msentraid/current/broker.conf` afterwards, for example with a **Run command line** step. See the authd documentation for the available settings.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://documentation.2pintsoftware.com/deployr/reference/step-definitions/configure-linux-for-entra-id.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
